Amazon to Launch .free, .hot, and .spot Domains in May After Long Delay

Amazon is finally set to launch three new top-level domains (TLDs) — .free, .hot, and .spot — from the 2012 ICANN expansion round, marking a significant, if delayed, entry into the domain name space.

The rollout begins with a sunrise period on April 2, reserved for trademark holders. This will be followed by a Dutch auction-style early access phase running from May 12–17, where prices will drop daily. Initial day-one pricing is expected to hover around $6,000, decreasing to approximately $3,000 on day two, and as low as $200 on the final day — though registrar pricing may vary.

General availability for the public begins May 19, with retail prices expected to be:

  • .free – $44.99

  • .hot – $59.99

  • .spot – $29.99
(based on pricing from registrar 101Domain)

Amazon secured rights to .free and .hot through private resolution among competing applicants, and paid $2.2 million in an ICANN auction to win .spot, outbidding competitors like Google and Dotspot LLC.

The three new TLDs are expected to appeal to brands and marketers looking for creative naming opportunities and memorable digital identities — particularly .free, which may be attractive for promotional and freemium business models.
