GoDaddy Awarded Patent for “Recommending Domains from Free Text”

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has officially granted GoDaddy (NYSE: GDDY) patent number 12,399,944 for its technology titled “Recommending domains from free text.”

GoDaddy has been exploring this concept for years. The company initially filed a similar patent application back in 2018 but later abandoned it. In 2020, it filed again—and now the patent has been approved.

What the Patent Covers

At its core, the invention is designed to generate domain name ideas from natural, free-form text.

One key use case is during the website-building process. For example, as a user fills in their “About Us” section, the system could automatically scan the text, identify relevant keywords, and recommend short, memorable domain names that match the business’s identity.

The patent explains the process as follows:

  • The system scans uploaded content or text entered by the user.

  • It extracts the main concepts from the text while filtering out irrelevant terms (like “about us,” stop words, or generic website phrases).

  • From those concepts, it generates domain name suggestions that are both meaningful and easy to remember.

This ensures that the recommendations focus only on relevant branding terms while avoiding clutter or confusing results.

Why It Matters

Choosing the right domain name is often a friction point for new businesses. By automating the process and leveraging the content a user already provides, GoDaddy can make domain discovery:

  • Simpler – no need to brainstorm endlessly.

  • Smarter – suggestions tie directly to a brand’s actual messaging.

  • Faster – domains appear instantly as the user builds their site.

Who’s Behind the Patent

The patent lists Wei-Cheng Lai and Wenbo Wang as the inventors.

With this technology, GoDaddy is pushing domain name search beyond keywords—toward context-aware recommendations that align with real-world branding.
