Google Has a New Domain: G.AI

Google has quietly secured a new, ultra-short domain: G.AI.

The move continues Google’s broader effort to streamline its web presence. Earlier this year, the company shut down its country-specific Google domains and redirected all traffic to a single google.com destination.

What G.AI Does

Unlike those earlier redirects, G.AI serves a very specific purpose. While it ultimately forwards to google.com, it doesn’t open the standard search page. Instead, it takes users directly to Google’s AI Mode tab.

AI Mode is Google’s conversational search experience. It looks and feels similar to tools like ChatGPT, but its focus is different: rather than open-ended conversation, AI Mode is optimized for information retrieval, research, and query-based exploration.

Why This Matters

Securing G.AI gives Google a memorable, brand-aligned shortcut to its AI experience — and reinforces how central AI has become to the company’s future search strategy. It also highlights a broader trend among major tech firms: using short, purpose-driven domains to guide users directly into specific product experiences.

In short, G.AI isn’t just a vanity domain. It’s a front door to how Google wants users to interact with search in the AI era.
